Let's Talk About Blessings

I was reading a devotional this morning about blessings; it really made me think. What constitutes a blessing?

When you think of blessings, a lot of times, you may think something like "...blessed with a nice house (insert object)" or "...blessed with plenty of money." A blessing doesn't always pertain to money or things. There are people without a lot of monetary wealth that have a wealth of blessings. They are happier than some people with more money than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. But what makes this so?

Here is the definition of blessing according to Merriam-Webster:
  1. 1a :  the act or words of one that blesses <say the blessing over the wine> <a priestly blessing>
b :  approval, encouragement <asked her parents for their blessing before he proposed>
  2. 2 :  a thing conducive to happiness or welfare <My daughter is a blessing to me in my old age.> <Their absence turned out to be a blessing in disguise.> <Count your blessings.>
  3. 3 :  grace (see 1grace 5) said at a meal <said the blessing before dinner>

Let's take the first definition (b). This is like "giving someone your blessing." That means with the approval of the person doing the blessing, the receiver may have the confidence to reach/ achieve a goal and finish a task. Also, they know they have that person behind them for whatever it is and it will help them on to their destination.
The second definition is where it gets a little trickier for me. This one is very subjective. What makes you happy? How do you know when something is conducive to your happiness or welfare? When does something become just a WANT because of what others have? I can't answer any of these questions for you. You will need to look within your heart to know the answers.

The third definition is self-explanatory. We should be thankful for the food we are given to help sustain us.

This is something I do know about blessings...the Lord promises to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). If that's not a blessing, I don't know what is! I think, when we trust Him and let Him lead us, we will know what it feels like to be truly blessed. We will be living where we need to be living. It will be right. That trumps a new car any day!

He told the disciples not to be anxious about what they will eat, their bodies, their clothes.... Why do we worry about it? He cares for us, too!

"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace."
 Numbers 6:24–26
